CRHA has taken handover of seven new homes for rent at West Beckon Close, Shop, Morwenstow. The development consists of two 3 bedroom houses, two 2 bedroom houses, one 2 bedroom bungalow and two 2 bedroom flats (for single people and/or childless couples). All of the properties have heating and hot water provided by ground source heat pumps and the houses and bungalows also have wood burning stoves to provide an additional form of heating.

The development is on an "exceptions" site on land acquired from Mr & Mrs Wickett. It was designed by Trewin Design Partnership and constructed by JJ Jones & Sons. Grant funding was received from North Cornwall District Council and the Housing Corporation.

New local needs housing on St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly

Six new homes to meet local housing needs have been completed at Barnes Acre on St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly. All of the homes are for rent and have been constructed by Cornwall Rural Housing Association with the assistance of grant funding from the Housing Corporation. The new homes have been built on land acquired from the Duchy of Cornwall.

The scheme comprises three 3 bedroom houses and three 2 bedroom houses. The properties have been designed to be inexpensive to heat and are fitted with ground source heat pumps which provide heating and hot water. Other features include the provision of low energy lighting and water saving features such as a rainwater harvesting system which recycles rainwater for use in toilets and washing machines. They have been independently assessed as achieving an EcoHomes rating of “Very Good”.

Peter Moore, Director of Cornwall Rural Housing Association, stated that: “We are pleased to have been able to work so closely with the Duchy of Cornwall and the Council of the Isles of Scilly to provide six homes for rent to meet local needs. We understand that the provision of these six homes helped to ease a log-jam on the Council’s waiting list which meant that a total of sixteen families were rehoused.

The name of Barnes Acre was chosen to commemorate William Barnes who built the big house at Normandy on St Mary’s in 1900. It was about this time that he also built the greenhouses and farm sheds which previously occupied the site of this new development and his great grandson still lives in the neighbouring farmhouse.

The scheme comprises four 3 bedroom houses and four 2 bedroom houses. The properties have been designed to be inexpensive to heat and are fitted with ground source heat pumps which provide heating and hot water. Other features include the provision of low energy lighting and water saving features such as water butts and dual-flush toilets.

Peter Moore, Director of Cornwall Rural Housing Association, stated that: “We are pleased to have been able to work so closely with Carrick District Council to provide eight homes for rent to meet local needs. We are particularly please that the additional money raised form the council tax on second homes has helped Carrick to provide grant funding for these much-need homes.”

Four New Affordable Homes in Kilkhampton

Four new homes to meet local housing needs have been acquired by Cornwall Rural Housing Association (CRHA) at Priestacott Park, Kilkhampton. All of the homes are for rent and were built because of a planning condition imposed by North Cornwall District Council which required the developer of the private housing on this site to provide 4 affordable homes.

The homes comprise of two 3 bedroom houses and two 2 bedroom houses and they were acquired with assistance of grant funding from The Housing Corporation.

CRHA also put some of its own resources into the scheme to make sure that it achieved an EcoHomes “Very Good” rating through the installation of ground source heat pumps to provide heating and hot water.

Peter Moore, Director of Cornwall Rural Housing Association, commented that: “The combination of relatively low wages and higher than average house prices found in Cornwall means that many young people often cannot afford to live in the areas where they were born and brought up and it is hoped that developments such as this can help rural communities remain sustainable”.
